REMIX is a socially engaged, conceptual art piece that explores the potential of metamorphosis and restorative action in transforming a monument honoring a hero of the Confederacy into a mechanism of empowerment, equity, and reparation.
In the summer of 2020, the City of Richmond Virginia let a Request For Proposals (RFP) for acquisition of the removed Confederate monuments within Monument Row, a National Historic District. REMIX begins with the premise that simply relocating the controversial monuments to other locations does not address the essential reason precipitating it’s removal.
DARNstudio’s proposal suggests a radical alternative to relocation: recontextualization through fragmentation of the sculpture into multiple individual artworks or relics. The relics would then be sold with the net proceeds being distributed to the Richmond Public School system.
