G.O.A.T. is a social sculpture cum board game that reimagines the contemporary art world by centering black artists, gallerists, curators, institutions & collectors. The game offers the potential to shift public perception about who gets to participate in the “game of art”; to help foster an ethos of authentic inclusivity and belonging; and to inspire love-and expand awareness-of art created by artists of African descent, particularly in younger generations of Black heritage.
This project is made possible by grant from Newark Artist Accelerator funded by The Warhol Foundation. The first edition of G.O.A.T. is created in partnership with The Newark Museum of Art.
Twenty-four art cards represent works by the GOATS of the 20th century art canon. The goal of the game is to build the most valuable art collection. The player whose collection is worth the most wins the game. (Top card: Alma Thomas, “Orangerie”, 1973, oil on canvas, Newark Museum of Art)
Sample collector profile cards depict fictional “players” vying to be the GOAT of the art world.
Players can choose from six art world characters, from deep-pocket collectors or a saavy gallerist to a shrewd art advisor, nepobaby poseur or a mysterious artist. Let the games begin!
